Start The Cycle is a group cycling program in Marquette County that encourages and motivates youth by modeling an example of healthy lifestyle, physical activity and positive emotional support.

When students apply to become a member on the STC team, they are expected to attend weekly practices for 20 weeks and prepare to achieve the goal of completing the 28-mile Ore To Shore Mountain Bike Epic Race. When they commit and achieve this goal, they earn their mountain bike, riding gear and equipment. For some students, this bike becomes their only reliable form of transportation to obtain employment – allowing them to financially contribute to their household or learn financial responsibility. For other students, this bike becomes a healthy hobby and a source of freedom when they need to take a break from their home life or negative influences. Students that have earned their bikes are welcome back to participate in future seasons as long as they respect their equipment.

There is no financial responsibility for the student or their family to participate. STC is solely funded by grants, private donations, and our annual bike-raffle fundraiser. STC is solely organized and supported by volunteers. In addition to 35-45 student participants, trained adult mentors also commit to the 20-week practice schedule, with either direct one-on-one mentorship or two students per adult mentor.
